A Journey of Compassion: Reflecting on a Life in Home Care
Rosa Tavarez is among many Home Care Workers at Cooperative Home Care Associates, who build her career in providing quality services to those in need in our community. After a lifetime of providing home care services, Rosa has entered retirement. CHCA interviewed Rosa about her 23 years of home care services at CHCA.
Getting Started in Home Care
“When I arrived in New York from Santo Domingo in 2001, I had no idea how deeply the path ahead would shape my life. At the time, I wasn’t working, but I carried with me the experience of caring for my father during his illness. That personal journey gave me the foundation to begin formal training in home care, and just two months after starting, I found myself stepping into a new role as a peer mentor. It was the beginning of something bigger than I had ever imagined”.
Memories that Made a Career
“Looking back over the years, my career has been filled with unforgettable moments. One of the most powerful was traveling to Washington, D.C., to advocate for home care workers through my work with Policy Action Group. Being able to speak up about the essential role of home care workers and share our stories made me proud and gave me purpose. But equally memorable were the long-term relationships I formed with my clients, especially one I worked with for nine years. I helped him stay independent, attended appointments with him, and shared conversations that lifted our spirits. His face would light up when I walked through the door”.
“My time with CHCA allowed me to wear many hats: Senior Aide, Peer Mentor, and Advocate. Whether I was visiting workers in the field or making calls to welcome new home care workers, I always strived to support others the way I was once supported. Through advocacy training and mentorship, I found another passion, helping others grow in this meaningful work”.
Challenges that Built Resilience
“Of course, the journey wasn’t without its challenges. I once had to walk away from a client who was aggressive toward me. It was a difficult experience, but it taught me the importance of setting boundaries and prioritizing safety. Those moments tested me, but they also made me stronger”.
“Throughout it all, what kept me going was the knowledge that I was making a real difference. I became more than just a caregiver to my clients, I became like family to them. I was there when no one else could be, offering companionship, support, and care. These experiences taught me the value of being present, especially for your loved ones. That’s a lesson I carry with me always”.
Words to the Next Generation of Home Care Workers
“For those just starting their journey in home care, my advice is simple but essential: have patience, show up on time, be kind, and always try to understand your client’s perspective. Walk in their shoes. It’s not just about completing tasks; it’s about the connections”.
“There are things I’ll miss. The daily routine, the sense of purpose, and the joy of helping others will stay with me in spirit. I hope that those I worked with, clients, families, and colleagues, will remember me as someone who treated others with respect, compassion, and an open heart”.
“Now, after 23 years of dedicated service, it’s time for a new chapter. My husband and I are both retiring, and we plan to enjoy some well-earned rest, travel back to my homeland, and spend precious time with our children and grandchildren”.
Hope for the Future of Home Care
“As I step away from this work, my hope for the future of home care is bright. The need is only growing, so many people are alone, without a family, and in need of care. I hope CHCA continues to grow and thrive, reaching more people and changing more lives”.
“This isn’t goodbye, just a new beginning. And I’ll carry every story, every lesson, and every smile with me into this next season of life”.
Last month, as Rosa made the decision to retire, so did several other workers at CHCA, like Rosa, who have dedicated a lifetime to serving our community. CHCA is honored to have worked with these incredible individuals: we are extremely thankful for the many years they have invested in our organization and community. We wish them much rest, health, and happiness in the new chapter of their life.
